What is A Ball Valve
A ball valve is a valve that controls the flow of fluid by rotating 90 degrees. Its main components include a valve stem and a ball. The working principle of a ball valve is to use the valve stem to drive the ball to rotate, thereby achieving the switching and regulation of the fluid.
What are the Advantages of Ball Valves
The ball valve is mainly composed of a ball, a valve body and a valve stem. It has a simple structure, a small size, a light weight, is easy to install, simple to construct and easy to maintain. The ball valve only needs to rotate 90° to complete the switch action. The operation is convenient and quick, and it is especially suitable for occasions that require frequent switching. The sealing ring has multiple points of sealing and has good sealing performance.
Where are Ball Valves mainly Used
Ball valves are widely used in many industries, mainly including oil refining, long-distance pipelines, chemicals, papermaking, pharmaceuticals, water conservancy, electricity, municipal engineering and steel industries.
What are the Sizes of Ball Valves
DN is the abbreviation of Nominal Diameter, which is a standardized size identification method used to indicate the approximate inner diameter size of pipes, valves, pipe fittings, etc. It should be noted that DN is not an accurate inner diameter measurement value, but a standardized specification reference.
Inch is a unit of length measurement originating from the United Kingdom and is also widely used internationally, especially in some traditional industrial and engineering fields.
1 inch = 25.4 mm
Small ball valve
valve with a nominal diameter ≤ 1 1/2 inch ball valve (DN≤40mm). Suitable for small flow systems that require precise control, such as laboratory equipment.
Medium diameter ball valve
valve with a nominal diameter of 2 inch – 12 inch ball valve (DN50~300mm). Suitable for industrial pipeline systems with medium flow, such as medium-sized pipelines in the chemical, petroleum and other industries
Large diameter ball valve
valve with a nominal diameter of 14 inch – 48 inch ball valve (DN350~1200mm). Suitable for large flow systems, such as large water treatment plants, oil pipelines, etc.
Extra large diameter ball valve
valve with a nominal diameter of ≥ 56 inch ball valve (DN≥1400mm). It is suitable for ultra-large flow systems, such as large-scale water conservancy projects, oil and gas transmission trunk lines, etc.
What are the Pressures Range of Ball Valves
Nominal pressure is a digital identification code related to pressure, which is used for reference. It is not an exact value and is usually taken as the round integer of the priority number of the R10 series.
When purchasing or importing ball valves, you will often encounter flange or valve connection pound classes such as CL1500. I would like to know the PN corresponding to each pound class. What is the corresponding PN of CL150, 300, 400, 600, 800, 900, 1200, 1500, 2500, 3000 in MPa
The nominal pressure PN of valves includes the following six levels: 2.0MPa (Class 150), 5.0MPa (Class 300), 11.0MPa (Class 600), 15.0MPa (Class 900), 26.0MPa (Class 1500), 42.0MPa (Class 2500). Class 800 and Class 1200 are derived by interpolation of the above ANSI standards.
Conversion between Psi and MPa Psi is a pressure unit, defined as pounds per square inch, 145psi=1MPa (the value of the PSI unit multiplied by 0.007 is the MPa number) The full name of PSI in English is Pounds per square inch.
1bar≈14.5psi, 1psi=6.895 kPa=0.06895bar, 1bar=0.1Mpa

How to Choose the Actuated Ball Valve
The driving mode of the ball valve refers to the function of opening, closing or regulating the fluid channel through different forms of energy conversion. Common valve driving modes mainly include the following:
Manual ball valve
This is the simplest and most direct driving mode, which realizes the opening and closing control of the valve by manually operating the handle or lever. The advantages of manual driving are simple operation and low cost, but it is limited by manpower and is not suitable for large-caliber, high-pressure, or occasions that require frequent operation or remote control.
Gear box ball valve
The valve is opened and closed by operating the turbine, which is more labor-saving than handle operation, but the operation time is longer, and it can be used for large-caliber and high-pressure ball valves.
Electric ball valve
The valve actuator (such as electric actuator) is driven by a motor to realize the opening and closing of the valve. The advantages of electric driving are convenient operation and rapid response, which can realize remote control and automatic operation, and are suitable for complex control systems.
Pneumatic ball valve
Compressed air is used as the power source to drive the valve through a pneumatic actuator (such as a cylinder). The advantages of pneumatic drive are fast response speed, simple structure and high reliability. It is widely used in flammable and explosive environments in chemical, petroleum and other industries.
Hydraulic drive ball valve
Use the pressure of hydraulic oil to drive the valve actuator. The advantages of hydraulic drive are large output force and high control accuracy. It is suitable for occasions requiring large torque and high-precision control, such as valve control of heavy equipment.
Electromagnetic ball valve
Control the opening and closing of the valve by the attraction and release of the electromagnet. The advantages of electromagnetic drive are compact structure and rapid response. It is often used for rapid cut-off and emergency shutdown in automatic control systems.
The selection of a suitable valve drive method requires comprehensive consideration based on the specific application scenario, control requirements and environmental conditions to ensure that the valve can operate efficiently and reliably.
How to Choose the End Connection of Ball Valve
Common connection methods for ball valves mainly include the following:
Flange ball valve
The valve body has flanges at both ends, which correspond to the flanges on the pipeline and are fixed in the pipeline by bolts. Flange connection is the most commonly used connection method in valves, suitable for pipelines of various diameters and pressures, but it is necessary to pay attention to the temperature limit, and it is generally used below 350°C.
Welded ball valve
The two ends of the valve body are processed according to the requirements of butt welding, corresponding to the pipeline welding groove, and fixed to the pipeline by welding. This connection method is suitable for various pressure and temperature conditions, but it is difficult to disassemble and reinstall.
Wafer ball valve
There are usually positioning holes on the valve body between the two flanges to facilitate installation and positioning, and the valve and the two ends of the pipeline are directly clamped together with bolts. This connection method is suitable for occasions that require frequent disassembly.
Threaded ball valve
It also called NPT ball valves, FNPT ball valves, the valve body is processed according to various thread standards, with internal and external threads, corresponding to the threads on the pipeline. Commonly used for small valves, sealants need to be used at the connection parts.
Clamp ball valve
Use two bolts to fix, suitable for low-pressure valves that are frequently disassembled, such as sanitary valves. This connection method is fast and convenient. Socket welding ball valve
The two ends of the valve body are processed according to the requirements of socket welding, and connected to the pipeline by socket welding. This connection method is suitable for occasions that require frequent disassembly. These connection methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. Choosing the appropriate connection method needs to be determined according to the specific use environment and needs.
How to Choose the Material of Ball Valve
The following key factors need to be considered when selecting valve materials:
Media properties: Understand the corrosiveness, temperature and pressure characteristics of the media.
Working pressure: Valves of different materials are suitable for different pressure ranges.
Working temperature: High temperature and low temperature media require different materials.
Usage environment: Consider the use environment of the valve, such as whether it is exposed to the outdoors, whether there is strong mechanical vibration, etc.
ball valve materials and their applicable scope:
Carbon steel ball valve
Suitable for media such as water, steam, air, hydrogen, ammonia, nitrogen and petroleum products with a nominal pressure of PN ≤ 32.0MPa and a temperature of -30 to 425℃.
Stainless steel ball valve
Suitable for corrosive media such as nitric acid and acetic acid with a nominal pressure of PN ≤ 6.4MPa and a temperature of ≤ 200℃
Forged steel ball valve
Suitable for valves of all pressure levels.
DSS duplex stainless steel ball valve
The pressure range is 150LB to 1500LB. The temperature range is -29℃ to 300℃. It has high strength, good corrosion resistance and excellent mechanical properties, and is suitable for use under corrosive working conditions with both abrasion and erosion. Bidirectional steel ball valves are widely used in power, petroleum, chemical, gas and other fields, and are suitable for industrial wastewater, seawater, brine, acid and other media. Its excellent corrosion resistance enables it to show special resistance to stress corrosion cracking in chlorine environments.
Super duplex stainless steel ball Valve
The pressure range is 150LB to 3200LB. The temperature range is -29℃ to 300℃. This valve is suitable for high temperature and high pressure industrial fields such as petroleum, chemical, and natural gas, and can maintain stable performance in harsh working environments.
Copper alloy ball valve: suitable for water, seawater, oxygen, air, oil and other media with a nominal pressure of PN≤2.5MPa, and steam media with a temperature of -40~250℃.
Cast iron ball valve
suitable for water, steam, air, gas and oil and other media with a nominal pressure of PN≤1.0MPa and a temperature of -10℃~200℃.
Ductile iron ball valve
suitable for media such as water, steam, air and oil with a nominal pressure of PN ≤ 4.0 MPa and a temperature of -30 to 350°C.
By comprehensively considering these factors, you can choose a valve material that suits specific application requirements to ensure the performance and life of the valve.
What are the Structures of Ball Valves
Ball valves have many different structures and different functions.
Trunnion mounted ball valve
It is a high-performance ball valve suitable for high pressure and large diameter occasions. The ball of the fixed ball valve is fixed and does not move after being pressurized. The valve seat is floating. After being pressurized by the medium, the valve seat moves, so that the sealing ring is pressed tightly against the ball to ensure sealing.
Floating ball valve
The ball of the floating ball valve does not have a fixed shaft and can rotate freely in the valve seat sealing ring. The ball can rotate freely in the valve seat sealing ring under the action of the medium pressure, and the sealing is ensured by the preload and medium pressure.
Metal seat ball valve
The valve with metal sealing pair, the ball and the valve seat sealing ring are made of metal materials, and the valve is opened and closed by rotating the ball. This design enables the metal hard seal ball valve to maintain good sealing performance under high pressure and high temperature conditions, and is suitable for various harsh working environments.
Soft-sealed ball valve
The ball and the valve seat are made of soft sealing material. This material has a certain elasticity and can generate an outward thrust when the valve is closed, which offsets part of the pressing force between the ball and the valve seat, thereby achieving a completely sealed effect.
Bidirectional ball valve
A ball valve that achieves forward and reverse fluid sealing through two sealing surfaces on the ball. It is suitable for occasions that require bidirectional fluid control and cutoff, such as petroleum, chemical, natural gas, water treatment and other industrial fields.
Direction ball valve
The sealing performance of the ball valve can only be achieved in one direction. One-way sealing ball valves are suitable for occasions where sealing performance is not required, such as the treatment of media such as gas, steam, and water. However, under more severe working conditions such as high pressure, ultra-high pressure, high temperature, low temperature, and irritating media, the sealing performance of the one-way sealing ball valve may not meet the needs. At this time, a two-way sealing ball valve should be selected.
Top entry ball valve
The ball, the core component, is located on the upper part of the valve. This design makes installation and maintenance more convenient. The seals and other internal components can be replaced and maintained directly without disassembling the pipeline, greatly reducing maintenance time and cost.
Side entry ball valve
This design makes side-mounted ball valves more convenient to install and maintain because its structure allows installation and maintenance from the side, reducing operating force.
High pressure ball valve
High-pressure ball valves mostly use hard-sealed ball valves, and high-hardness alloy materials are welded on the ball and seat seals, so that the valve has better pressure resistance and wear resistance. It is particularly suitable for high temperature, high pressure, and corrosive media environments, so it has unique application value in the industrial field.
Cryogenic ball valve
Valves specially designed for low-temperature environments usually have an operating temperature range of -196℃ to 540℃. Cryogenic ball valves are suitable for management systems of cryogenic liquid storage and transportation equipment, and are mainly used to output liquid cryogenic media such as ethylene, liquid oxygen, liquid hydrogen, liquefied natural gas, liquefied petroleum products, etc.
Segment ball valve
The ball of the Segment ball valve is V-shaped. When the valve ball rotates, the V-shaped ball cooperates with the V-shaped seat groove of the valve body to form a V-shaped flow channel, thereby controlling the flow of the medium. It is the only structure in the ball valve that can be used as a regulating valve body.
Double Block Double Bleed Ball Valve
DBB ball valve (double block double bleed ball valve) is a valve designed to simplify the complexity of the piping system, and is intended to replace the connection method of multiple valves in the traditional pipeline. Its main function is to reduce the leakage points in the system, quickly achieve discharge and shutdown, while maximizing the saving of installation space, simplifying the installation procedure, and reducing the pressure of the pipeline system.
DBB ball valves are widely used in hydraulic system pipelines in the power, petrochemical, metallurgy, marine, oil and gas, coal gas, pharmaceutical and other industries. It is suitable for pipelines of media such as aviation kerosene, light oil, natural gas, liquefied gas, etc., as an ideal device for cutting off the medium.
